Eng100 03/28/17 Mindsets I have recently read “Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research , Carol Dweck Says” by Carol Dweck and in this article , she talk about the plus side of teaching students or your kids at home to have a growth mindset vs fixed mindset. You probably asking yourself what is a mindset. Mindset is a simple idea discovered by world renowned Stand University psychologist Carol Dweck in decades of research on achievement and success idea that make all the difference On the other hand , I read “The Perils of Growth Mindset Education” by Alfie Kohn , he/she talk about how teaching Dweck way will handicap our kids and student.” A 2010 study found that when students whose self-worth hinges on their performance face the prospect of failure, it doesn’t help for them to adopt a growth mindset. In fact, those who did so were even more likely to give themselves an excuse for screwing up — a strategy known as “self-handicapping” — as compared to those with the dreaded fixed mindset.” said Alfie Kohn. “In a fixed mindset, people believe their bacic qualities, like their intelligence are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence instead of developing them. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work brains and talent are just the starting point.” Dweck said. After learning whats a growth and fixed mindset, I wonder what was my mindset in my early years of learn and do I have the same mindset. How did my mindset impact my abilities of learn as a student. Far back I can remember I had a growth mindset. I don't think someone had to teach my why or how to had a growth mindset like Dweck trying to do. As a young boy I just know if I had hard and take my time I will the right answer. When i did not get the right answer nobody didn't praise for trying hard. My teacher will ask me how did I get this answer and she will let me find what i was doing right to get it. I will try a simple problem like the one I got right until I know what i'm doing. You can say I was will to learn as a young boy. Everything was still new and fresh to me. If I had someone giving me a star will I’m get the problem wrong. I believe my learning process will be different. I will be so depend on someone cheers me all the way. I see where Kohn coming from with the handicap. The real world not going to do that. As a college student a carry the same growth mindset. A growth mindset is necessary because they're going to be so many new things that you going to have to learn. Maybe very difficult to process in your mind what they fixed mind set. My first day in English class we had to vote for what website we going to use for the assignment. Starting my first with a fixed mindset scared of use something new I voted for none. Glading I must be in a class full with growth mindset more than half voted for weebly. When I got home using a growth mindset I made a weebly and play around with it , trying to get the hang out the website. I end up really like weebly. It's better than handing in paper the old way. Without a growth mindset I will never get through a class learn something in chemistry. I believe everybody should have a growth mindset. What's the benefits of having a growth mindset, you may ask. I enjoy doing the work, even when I’m not good at it. “This is wonderful feature of the growth mindset. You don’t have to think you’re already great at something to want to do it and to enjoy doing it” Dweck said. I improve myself insight and self esteem. A lot of studies I know drop out of school because of terrible at estimating their abilities. You know how something you feel stupid when learning something new. People with fixed mindset feel not smart when they make mistake. When I feel stupid , is when I work on something for a long time and I start to figure it out and i was over thinking it. As you can see why I growth mindset is the mindset everybody should have in life. I think we need to way a better way to teach the way of a growth mindset. I don’t want to handicap our future worker. Eng100 03/28/17 After I read chapter five (pg. 28 - 38) of Teaching Adolescents to Become Learners [...] (Chicago University), I had a better understand of what is an academic mindset. Chapter five mainly focus on the four academic mindset (belonging, growth mindset , self- efficacy and relevance/purpose.) I honestly can said I do use all of these mindsets since I been a college student. The most important mindset that I believe help achieve academic success at Delaware County Community College is belonging. Out of all my friends I’m the only one in school. Some days I get the feel like this not for me. When I start feel like that I can see how much effort I put in my school work. If I’m feeling like I don’t belong here why will I get up in the morning to go to school. That will effort my attendance. When I remind “I belong in this academic community” I has a strong impact on my performance. Feeling part of a school makes me more likely to engage in the activities. For example two weeks ago the school had all the club sign up sheet out in the open. I saw the club in my particular field engineer but I walk right past the sign up paper knowing I should sign up. The reason because I had that “I don’t belong here” mindset. I got roughly ten steps away for the paper and the mindset that help me turn around and sign up for that club was “I belong here” mindset kick it. I’m not say the rest not important or I don’t use them. I know what get me out of bed each morning for English at 8 am. I belong in this academic community. Jahbrill Washington
Eng100 03/28/17 After I read the definition of hiraeth. I had a better understanding of the project. My cousin and I started to dwell on the past. Many ideas being to pop in my head , that i didn't have before the conversation. Most difficult part of my writing process was the begin. I always a trouble putting the first apart together. I think I over think the first process. I remember in class my teacher said just start writing down your thought. Once i had that mindset , my juice was pouring out. The another process I find pretty difficult was really getting touch with my feelings. Doing this projects was kind of hard for me. I overcame holding back my feelings but looking at old pics of my family and expressing my feelings on the paper. I started taking this project soon we talking about it. I was excited to get to work. In class I kind of had I good idea what we had to do for this project. I wanted to express my family I been holding in for the longest time. Saw a good opportunity to do so. I was in my bedroom with all my family picture on the wall. I think the pics motivation me more. I don’t think I will chance my writing process because I got some good work out of it. Eng100 03/28/17 Mindsets In these two article I read over the weekend “Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research , Carol Dweck Says (Carol Dweck)” and “The Perils of "Growth Mindset Education" [...] (Alfie Kohn)” give you a nice idea of what's a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Give tips how to deal with a student with a fixed mindset. What's the good you get out have a growth mindset. Differences between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset having the ability of learning something new and difficult. A growth mindset student will ask the question to solve the problem. They understand this problem is hard but I can do it. A growth mindset is a program of having an open mind. Not afraid of looking dumb. People in a growth mindset believe anyone can be good at anything, because your abilities are entirely due to your actions. A fixed mindset is poison to learning. Have a trouble to accept something new or not willing to learn new things. Like a old dog can’t learn new trick. The mindset set up believe they not good enough to get the job done. As a college student I think I have a growth mindset. I won’t been in college with a fixed mindset because its would be very hard for to pass these classes. My first Semester at Delaware Community College , I took a class on growth and fixed mindset. Doing this course I learn the trick to keep a growth mindset. I like learning new things. As an engineer you got to have a growth mindset. I believe i'm a problem solver. Assignment page Academic Mindsets Argument Jahbrill Washington
Eng100 03/28/17 Game Night Saturday morning roughly around 8am , waking up to the smell of turkey bacon in the air. My eye fighting to stay close but if this was a school day the shoe would of been on the other foot. Guess as a lil boy it's just natural to get up early on Saturday. As my eyes opening my first seen was towards the television. My favorite cartoon was on dragon ball z. I was tempted to watch the episode but knowing my big brother was up from all the sound he made running down the stair. I know its was matter of time my share of bacon was going to be gone. Around this time my cousin was staying with us. Him and his dad had disagree so my mom let him stay with us. She was big on family and sticking together. We all sitting at the wooden round table. Passing the half of gallon orange juice. Mom did her thing in the kitchen. She made her famous blueberry pancake , turkey bacon , cheese eggs , and cheese grits with extra butler and shrimps.. We had some small conversations between each bite of food. My brother was the first one asking for seconding like always. Surprisingly my brother Jahbar wasn’t fat but he can eat you out of a home. Jahbar and I had the same mom and dad. We was four years apart. A lot of people said we look like. I never saw it until later when i got older. Jahbar had long black curly hair. Most of the time his hair was braid back like Allen Iverson. He was pretty tall for his age. A lot of my mom's friends call him Rick Fox. At that time I did not know who he was. My mom always the last one to sit down and enjoy her cooking. Always wondering did she love her meal as much we do. Everyone will get seconding but her. My older cousin T Bone was the first to get done and clean off his plate. We barely spend time with him because his work schedule. I assume he was saving up to get his own apartment. Today was his day off on both jobs and today was game night. After breakfast mom reminded me its was my turn to pick the game. She know I never forget when it's my turn. I pick the same game every chance I get. Monopoly was mine game. I was the best if you ask me. As a young boy I always was fascinating with money. How paper can change your life for the better or worst. On the other hand if it's my turn to pick the game than I had to wash the dishes. I did not mind washing the plate , cups and the eating utensils. I dislike the pots and pans especially with the cheese grits. Its was a pain in the but getting the grits. Finally done with the dishes and my t- shirt soaking wet. Sound like nobody in the bathroom perfect time to get my day started. I know i had to move quickly because any moment I can miss my opening. Flying up the steps , drove in the bathroom with a sigh of relief. To see Jahbar using the toilet. “Get out of the bathroom dirty” said Jahbar. “You smell like a zoo keeper” I respond quickly. “Mooom” he scream. Bang! For the door I just slammed. Still go this wet t-shirt on so i walk to my bedroom. Throw the shirt in the closet lay down in the bed. Laying there looking at the ceilings fan feeling i was going in the dimension. Don't remember exactly what I was thinking but I know i was at peace. “Boy get your lazy butt up” said mom. “Im up, waiting for Jahbar to get out the bathroom” I said. “He been outside playing football for less 30mins now” mom said. I must really went to sleep and I did not even know. “Get up and clean this room before you get in the shower. You hear me?” she ask. “Yes mom” I said in the best way. While I’m picking up three weeks old socks and whatever else on my floor. Wondering why she always ask do we hear me. I’m not deaf. I was fast at cleaning my room or making it like clean. I didn't know the difference between the two. Game night with the family was a joyful moment. Night that nothing matter but being with your family. I don't know where the tradition started from but i know i did not never wanna it to end. The celling light was on just enough to see what's going on. Never know who up to no good on game night. Everybody wanna to win but only one can. The fan was blowing on low speed do not need the money blowing away. Mom was the banker, she was the only one we can trust. The game always was slow in the begin. At the right time everybody would had a spark to life. At this time i wish we had a camera to hold on to the moment forever. Wish I can tell my mom grandkids about the queen who lights my day and night. Hear my brother tell them stories about how we grew up. Now i see its wasn’t about who win or lose. I can see the bigger picture mom just wanna the family together. You don’t know when it's your last day waking up to your family turkey bacon smell.
