January 23, 2019 Thermo My name is Jahbrill. I’m from Chester pa. Chester is like 20 mins away from Temple University. I have one siblings, his name is Jahbar. Jahbar was killed on November 14, 2004. After my brother was killed, my mom decided to move out of Chester. My mom and I move to a small suburb in Delaware County. When I was in the 9th grade/ 2009 , my mom past away forcing me to move with my aunt in Chester. When I move back to Chester, I gravitated to the street life. Around 23 years I decided to go back to school in get my G.E.D. I receive my G.E.D fall/winter of 2015. The following summer I enroll in Delaware County Community College. I always had a liking in math/science all my life. Which help me made the decision on the major mechanical engineer. I was at DCCC for roughly 2 and half years before I transfer to Temple University. DCCC had thermodynamics but I didn't take the class there because the professor was bad at teaching , I was ready to left the school and last the class was only at night. It's funny because I end up still taking the class at night. I happy because I think I got the best professor in Pa teaching thermodynamics. I like the blog. This not the only class I had that wanted a blog.

This blog is a small summary of my team project I did in my engineer class.
Best Tower had to create a tower that meet the criteria 75 cm or higher. The tower had to hold 295g at the top of the tower. Best Tower only use approximately 40 index cards and 30 label sticker. We folded the legs of the tower into triangles. The design idea come from my partner Marisa. The base of the tower had the most legs. We just add a extra leg as we went up level. Approximately at 40 cm we reduce the legs to just four legs per level. We had total of ten level in our tower meeting the high requirement. We made the tower in 20 minutes and the tower hold the weight longer than ten minutes. To be honest with the time, cost, and material restriction the only thing I will do different is spending more time with making the legs. To make sure the tower legs was even on the corners. Making the tower legs more steady. I believe the tower would hold for additional ten minutes. Best tower design was the quickest and the cheapest project in our class. 4/20/2017 Eng100 Filmbase project Why Not In the film, Survivor, screenwriter Philip Shelby writes about Kate Abbott , an American security expert newly transferred to U.S embassy in London. Abbott do a series of background check , if she think you may cost harm to the U.S. In particular, Abbott’s suspicion is awaked by a Romanian scientist specializing in gases who claims to be going to United States for a medical conference. Abbott’s superior make sure the Romanian scientist got in the United States so he can start his master plan of a terrorist attack in Times Square with the Watchmaker. Abbott on a man hunt with the Watchmaker and the London Embassy. She finally find out the plot against America , so she went to Time Square and save Millions of innocent people. After watching this movie , I ask myself should America allow immigrants into the country? Yes, America should allow immigrants into the country because America was built on immigrants and the Declaration of Independence states that everyone is created equal with unalienable rights. People who come to live in a new country are called immigrants. Over the past 400 years, immigrants have had different reasons to come to America. Some immigrants came to America to escape wars. Other for the freedom to practice their religion without consequences. Still other came for the chance to own land or simply for a chance to work and escape for being poor. During 1607-1830 was the first wave of immigrants , approximately 1.2 million people came to America. The early immigrants were northwestern Europe, as can be seen from the ethnic of 1790: English 49% , African 19%, Scots-Irish 8%, Scottish 7%, German 7%, Dutch 4%, other 3%. Except for the enslaved Africans, the first wave of immigrants generally had an easier time being accepted as American. Many Americans wrongly believe that immigration hurts the economy. I was always hear immigrants taking jobs from American and lower their wages by working for less. According to a report published on Wednesday by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, prove immigrants are not take your jobs for less money. I know many American workers, struggling to recover from the recession , have said they feel squeezed out by immigrants. Fact are immigrants are entrepreneurs who create jobs. “According to a study of the bipartisan immigration bill passed in Senate in 2014, provisions in the bill could potentially bring between 336,000 and 470,000 undocumented immigrant entrepreneurs into the formal economy.” said National Council of La Raza in Immigrant Aren’t Taking Americans’ Jobs Immigration gives the United States an economic edge in the world economy. Immigrants bring ideas and entrepreneurial spirit to the U.S. economy. They keep our economy flexible, allowing U.S producers to keep prices down and to respond to changing consumer demands. “An authoritative 1997 study by the National Academy of Science(NAS) concluded that immigration delivered a “significant positive gain” to the U.S economy.” said Daniel Griswold in “Immigrants Have Enriched American Culture and Enhanced Our Influence in the World.” In 2013, immigrants added $1.6 trillion to total U.S. gross product. Immigrant entrepreneurs have also played a significant role in advancing technological and creating businesses. “Some of the most influential entrepreneurs in the United States are immigrants or children of immigrants” said Cesar Maximiliano Estrada in “How Immigrants Positively Affect the Business Community and the U.S Economy” We also wouldn’t have all these good foods in our country if someone didn't’ originally bring them here. I don’t know about you, but I love my mexican food and my pizza. Apple pie is a nice treat, but I wouldn’t want to be eating every single day. The culture they bring with them also helps our economy, because if a new type of food arrives in the USA. Immigrants have played an important role in building the United States, and they still continue to carry that mission today. Its is up to us and the Congress to reform the immigration system. The second paragraph of the United States Declaration of Independence said “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights.” Since God granted such rights the government could not take them away. In America, this fundamental truth is recognized and enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. Eng100 Hiraeth Project 4/27/2017 Three Musketeers Saturday morning roughly around 8 am, I wake up to the smell of turkey bacon in the air. My eyes fighting to stay close. My first sight was towards the television. My favorite cartoon was on Dragon Ball Z. I was tempted to watch the episode but I know my big brother was up from all the sound he made running down the steps. I know matter of time my share of turkey bacon was going to be gone. Light gleamed through the window onto the shiny utensils that mom was using to cut the butter. She washed the knife and place it on the marble counter. The top wooden cabinets was still open from mom going in and out of them while she put together breakfast for the family. The window was open and I can feel the smooth breeze. Around this time my cousin was staying with us. He and his dad had a disagree so mom let him stay with us. She was big on family and sticking together. We all sitting at the wooden round table. Passing the half of gallon orange juice. Mom did her thing in the kitchen. She made her famous blueberry pancake, turkey bacon, cheese eggs, and cheese grits with extra butter and shrimps. _____ I never know mom was extremely ill when I was younger. Mom illness wasn’t as bad than or she was great at hiding it. She never missed a Saturday morning breakfast with us. Now I can’t remember the last time I sat down at the table with my family. Her sickness really brought the family down. Most of the family will say she was the glue to the family. _____ We had some small conversations between each bite of food. My brother was the first one asking for second like always.Surprisingly my brother Jahbar wasn’t fat but he can eat you out of a house. Jahbar and I had the same mom and dad. We was four years apart. A lot of people said we look like. I never saw it until later when I got older. Jahbar had long black curly hair. Most of the time his hair was braid back like Allen Iverson. He was pretty tall for his age. A lot of my mom's friends call him Rick Fox. At that time I did not know who he was. Mom always the last one to sit down and enjoy her cooking. Always wonder did she love her meal as much we did. Everyone got second but her. My older cousin T Bone was the first to get done and clean off his plate. We barely spend time with him because his work schedule. I assume he was saving up to get his own apartment. Today was his day off on both jobs and today was game night. I was eight and nine years old when we started game night. The storm knocked out all the power in the neighborhood. From the lacked of entertainment Jahbar and I got into a small fight. Moms did what she always do and find a solution to problem. That was old board games we collected over the holidays. We forgot all about the electric because we was so focus on the game. On that day we make a packed to have game night on Saturday no matter what. Its was just the three Musketeers.(Jahbar, mom, and I) After breakfast mom reminded me it was my turn to pick the game. She know I never forget when it's my turn. I pick the same game every chance I get. Monopoly was mine game. I was the best if you ask me. As a lil boy I always was fascinating with money. How paper can change your life for the better or worst. On the other hand if it's my turn to pick the game than I had to wash the dishes. I did not mind washing the plate, cups and the eating utensils. I dislike the pots and pans especially with the cheese grits. Its was a pain in the butt getting the grits. _____ They took my family, when they took my big brother life. Nov 14 2004, Jahbar was fifth teen years old struggling to fight for his life. The guy that kill my big brother was dead wrong. Mom and I got the phone call we couldn’t make sense of it. I never saw mom break down like this before, all I was asking myself why. I was trying my best to be strong but the tears was cutting through my cheeks. The guy try to rob Jahbar thought he had some money. Jahbar only had a cell phone. Lord knows I hate that bullets that hit you brother. Lord knows I hate that guy that kill you brother. After that tragedy mom and I was never the same mentally. Mom took it the worst. She did whatever to make the pain go away for the moment. Hard liquor and drugs was her new love. Long night of partying and crying her eye out. Just see the pain she was going through was killing me every night. Neighbors seen her act out in public but they didn’t understand what my mom was going through. As time went past the party took a tole on mom. Mom spend her last days on earth was suffering on hospital bed. For 67 days straight I went to the hospital to visit her and wishing for one more board games just one more. At this time I was sixteen years old , roughly four years after Jahbar die. I barely recovered from that tragedy. _____ Game night with the family was a joyful moment. Night that nothing matter but being with my family three Musketeers. The celling light was on just enough to see what's going on. Never know who up to no good on game night. Everybody want to win but only one can. The fan was blowing on low speed do not need the money blowing away. Mom was the banker, she was the only one we can trust. The game always was slow in the begin. At the right time everybody would had a spark to life. At this time I wish we had a camera to hold on to the moment forever. The dices clicking in my small hand while my eye on Parkside. Counting the space in my head I need a six to pop on the dices and I will controlled the game. The dices fly out my hand hitting the board and both the dices rolling three black dots facing up. That smile I had on my face was pure happiness. I was with my love ones, my three Musketeers. Mindset is a simple idea discovered by world renowned Stand University psychologist Carol Dweck in decades of research on achievement and success idea that make all the difference. On the other hand , I read “The Perils of Growth Mindset Education” by Alfie Kohn , he talk about how teaching Dweck way will handicap our kids and the education system need to be fix not the kids. .” A 2010 study found that when students whose self-worth hinges on their performance face the prospect of failure, it doesn’t help for them to adopt a growth mindset. In fact, those who did so were even more likely to give themselves an excuse for screwing up — a strategy known as “self-handicapping” — as compared to those with the dreaded fixed mindset.” said Alfie Kohn. A growth mindset has helped to make me a better college student because I never give up when time got rough. “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence instead of developing them. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work brains and talent are just the starting point.” Dweck said.(Barshay) After learning whats a growth and fixed mindset, I wonder what was my mindset in my early years of learn and do I have the same mindset. How did my mindset impact my abilities of learn as a student. Far back I can remember I had a growth mindset. I don't think someone had to teach me why or how to had a growth mindset like Dweck trying to do with the kids in New york and other inner city she went to. As a young boy I just know if I had hard question to take my time. When I did not get the right answer nobody didn't praise for trying hard. My teacher will ask me how did I get this answer and she will let me find what I was doing right to get it. I believe that process build a strong foundation for me as a student to learn. I will try a similar problem like the one and I will keep trying until I know what I'm doing. You can say I was will to learn as a young boy. Everything was still new and fresh to me. If I had a fixed mindset as a young boy them same problem I had I would've just give up. I would have the thought of me just can’t do hard problem. I would of never overcame the struggle of learning something new and hard. I wouldn’t have the strong foundation I have today. Part of the growth mindset theory is understand that you can so call rewire your brain and increase your intelligence we call this neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is ability of the brain to adapt and form new habits by strengthening and weakening pathways between neurons (Sentis). “When student first come to understand that learning can rewire the brain and increase their intelligence, they often become more interested in learning and less afraid to do things that might make them look dumb.” said Yeager, D.S., Walton in Mindset Kit. Although Dweck make valid point when she introduced the theory of the growth and fixed mindset , there are still some people that disagree that mindsets are as important as she saying. Alfie Kohn says “It’s a verbal reward, an extrinsic inducement, and, like other rewards, is often construed by the recipient as manipulation. A substantial research literature has shown that the kids typically end up less interested in whatever they were rewarded or praised for doing, because now their goal is just to get the reward or praise.” I understand what he was saying but he didn’t understand what Dweck was saying and doing. The lack of understanding her plan with a growth mindset is why most of the people disagree with her. Dweck never said only praised the process. She know the education system need to be fixed. Nobody has the answer on how to fix the system right now. Dweck came up with a solution for now to help our kids that's struggling and afraid of the problem. A growth mindset will help student better understanding the process. As a college student a carry the same growth mindset. A growth mindset is necessary because they're going to be so many new things that you going to have to learn. Maybe very difficult to process in your mind with a fixed mindset. My first day in English class we had to vote for what website we going to use for the assignments. I started my first day with a fixed mindset. Scared of use something new I voted for none. Glading I must be in a class full with student thats has growth mindset more than half voted for weebly. When I got home using a growth mindset I made a weebly and play around with it , trying to get the hang out the website. I end up really like weebly. It's better than handing in paper the old way. Without a growth mindset I will never get through a class learn something in chemistry. What's the benefits of having a growth mindset, you may ask. I enjoy doing the work, even when I’m not good at it. “This is wonderful feature of the growth mindset. A lot of studies I know drop out of school because of terrible at estimating their abilities. You know how something you feel stupid when learning something new. People with fixed mindset feel not smart when they make mistake. When I feel stupid , is when I work on something for a long time and I start to figure it out and I was over thinking the problem. “In the fixed mindset, setbacks label you,” explains Dweck.”You terrified of losing and performing badly, because to you, you are your performance. When you perform badly, you’re devastated, because you, by association, are now no longer valuable or special.”(Barshay) Dweck give us knowledge on a growth mindset, it’s up to us to use what we know and help yourself to a better lifestyle. Thirteen Reasons Why follows the story of Clay Jensen,as he returns home from school to find a mysterious package on his bed. When he opens it , he finds seven cassette tapes. Upon inserting them into his family’s cassette player, he discovers were recorded by Hannah Baker, a girl that he went to school with who recently committed suicide. Her instructions are clear: each person who receives a package is one of the reasons why she killed herself, and after each person has completed listening to the tapes, hey must pass the package on to the next person, if anyone decides to break the chain, a separate set of tapes be released to the public. According to the American Psychological Association, teen suicide is a growing health concern. Data provided by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that it is third leading cause of death for the fifteen- to twenty-four-years-old age cohort. About 60 percent of teen suicides are committed with a gun, followed by intentional drug overdose. Suicide rates also differ between young women and young men. Though girls consider and attempt to commit suicide twice as often as boys, boys die by suicide four times as often as girls. This is in part because boys tend to use more lethal methods (firearms, hanging, jumping from heights) than girls (drug overdose and cutting) ("About Teen Suicide," Kid's Health). Jahbrill Washington

This episode Francis Mallman tells his story and love for food. He going back to many scene in the past where he talking about how his love for food and the out door begin. Mallman friends and family tells their side of the story too. Mallman's story show many place where he wishing he can go back to. My hiraeth project I'm doing in this class is about a home I wish i can go back to but can't. The only different between mines and his is I'm only talking about one place and Mallman have a few place. How Mallmann composition the dishes in a beautiful way like art and that the same way I try to composition my writing piece. |
