Eng100 03/28/17 Mindsets I have recently read “Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research , Carol Dweck Says” by Carol Dweck and in this article , she talk about the plus side of teaching students or your kids at home to have a growth mindset vs fixed mindset. You probably asking yourself what is a mindset. Mindset is a simple idea discovered by world renowned Stand University psychologist Carol Dweck in decades of research on achievement and success idea that make all the difference. On the other hand , I read “The Perils of Growth Mindset Education” by Alfie Kohn , he talk about how teaching Dweck way will handicap our kids and student.” A 2010 study found that when students whose self-worth hinges on their performance face the prospect of failure, it doesn’t help for them to adopt a growth mindset. In fact, those who did so were even more likely to give themselves an excuse for screwing up — a strategy known as “self-handicapping” — as compared to those with the dreaded fixed mindset.” said Alfie Kohn. I believe a growth mindset have impacted on my abilities as a student because I never give up and accepted my messed. “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence instead of developing them. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work brains and talent are just the starting point.” Dweck said. After learning whats a growth and fixed mindset, I wonder what was my mindset in my early years of learn and do I have the same mindset. How did my mindset impact my abilities of learn as a student. Far back I can remember I had a growth mindset. I don't think someone had to teach me why or how to had a growth mindset like Dweck trying to do with the kids in New york and other inner city she went to. As a young boy I just know if I had hard question to take my time. When I did not get the right answer nobody didn't praise for trying hard. My teacher will ask me how did I get this answer and she will let me find what I was doing right to get it. I believe that process build a strong foundation for me as a student to learn. I will try a similar problem like the one and I will keep trying until I know what I'm doing. You can say I was will to learn as a young boy. Everything was still new and fresh to me. If I had someone giving me a star when I’m getting the problem wrong. “When student first come to understand that learning can rewire the brain and increase their intelligence, they often become more interested in learning and less afraid to do things that might make them look dumb.” said Yeager, D.S., Walton in Mindset Kit. I believe my learning process will be different. I will be so depend on someone cheers me all the way. I see where Kohn coming from with the handicap. The real world not going to do that. As a college student a carry the same growth mindset. A growth mindset is necessary because they're going to be so many new things that you going to have to learn. Maybe very difficult to process in your mind with a fixed mindset. My first day in English class we had to vote for what website we going to use for the assignment. Starting my first with a fixed mindset scared of use something new I voted for none. Glading I must be in a class full with growth mindset more than half voted for weebly. When I got home using a growth mindset I made a weebly and play around with it , trying to get the hang out the website. I end up really like weebly. It's better than handing in paper the old way. Without a growth mindset I will never get through a class learn something in chemistry. According to researcher Carol Dweck, the attitude and belief that you can’t learn something is part of a mindset, and it's something we can change. “People with a growth mindset derive just as such happiness from the process as the results.they look for challenges and opportunities to engage with material, rather than deriving all of their satisfaction from mastery.” said Carol Dweck. I believe everybody should have a growth mindset. What's the benefits of having a growth mindset, you may ask. I enjoy doing the work, even when I’m not good at it. “This is wonderful feature of the growth mindset. You don’t have to think you’re already great at something to want to do it and to enjoy doing it” Dweck said. I improve myself insight and self esteem. A lot of studies I know drop out of school because of terrible at estimating their abilities. You know how something you feel stupid when learning something new. People with fixed mindset feel not smart when they make mistake. When I feel stupid , is when I work on something for a long time and I start to figure it out and I was over thinking the problem. “In the fixed mindset, setbacks label you,” explains Dweck.”You terrified of losing and performing badly, because to you, you are your performance. When you perform badly, you’re devastated, because you, by association, are now no longer valuable or special.” As you can see why I growth mindset is the mindset everybody should have in life. I think we need to way a better way to teach the way of a growth mindset. I don’t want to handicap our future worker. Assignment page Academic Mindsets Argument
